It utilizes high-energy Ultraviolet (UV) light to destroy viruses, bacteria and cysts, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The purifier couldn't be much easier to use. Simply fill a glass, plastic, ceramic or metal container with up to 32 ounces of clear water.
The device will automatically activate when you dip it into the water. Stir slightly to agitate the water. Ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye, but a visible LED light on the purifier indicates that it is working and shuts off as soon as a full dose has been delivered.
The Ultraviolet light breaks down the DNA of viruses, bacteria and cysts, rendering them harmless. The purifier provides 16 ounces of potable water in 48 seconds and 32 ounces in 90 seconds! Safety features include an optical water sensor, temperature sensors and a fully-enclosed and insulated lamp. Together these features ensure that the purifier works at optimal performance and its internal components remain fully functional.
NOTE: Because the penetration of UV light can be limited by discoloration, solids and debris, it is important that clear, unfrozen water be used. The SteriPEN FitsAll Filter or Water Bottle Pre-Filter (both sold separately) can be employed to filter particulate-filled water before UV treatment takes place. The purifier is powered by an internal USB-rechargeable battery (included).
The purifier's electronics are designed to activate only as long as there is enough battery power available to produce the required UV dosage, so there is no risk of an inadequate dose as your charge runs low. The lamp delivers up to 8,000 treatments and the battery can purify up to 20 liters on a single charge!
